REIMAGINING NEIGHBORHOOD COMMONS FOR DESIGN CENTER’S FUTURES FOR ALL

In 2022, the Design Center of the Philippines challenged designers of all walks to share their perspectives on what it means to design Futures For All as part of its International Design Conference. They welcomed practices beyond object design to introduce audiences to emerging practices of design as problem solving.

the challenge

As co-designer and co-facilitator, I delivered an Experiential Futures workshop around reframing derelict or underserved neighborhoods, particularly the inner streets of Metro Manila. I proposed a design framework and co-created ideation cards around built environments and typical areas within inner streets where residents gather. Using a “system of experiences” framing, a design canvas was created that would allow for ideation around neighborhood personas, multi-sensory experiences, activities, places, obstacles, enablers that could animate visions of reimagined streets.

the outcomes

Over 50 participants participated in this workshop that generated 10 visions of future neighborhood commons from transforming empty parking lots into communal play areas, green gathering spaces underneath bridges, thriving communities and intergenerational exchanges enabled by reinvigorated corners and derelict nooks within a the narrow neighborhood streets of Metro Manila.
